Why can't I monitor a dedicated hard drive with a PC hard drive?

July 31, 2022
A lot of people asked about the monitoring of the dedicated hard disk is good, can we not use the ordinary PC hard drive to install the hard disk recorder? Regarding this issue, it is not a problem that cannot be done, but a comprehensive review of stability and reliability. This is what we said. Generally, we use nails to nail nails. When there is no hammer, or when we can use the pliers, we can nail a nail. But the effect may be different.
Speaking of this topic, let's talk about the failure rate of the embedded hard disk recorder (DVR). After incomplete statistics: about 60% of DVRs come from hard disk read and write failures, and every time the hard disk problems, our engineering companies have to go to the door service, it is obvious that the on-site service will bring about an increase in service costs, which is not easy to earn. Point profit, and then transferred to the Ministry of Communications to send benefits. At the same time, the engineering company is also a loss of brand image.
In two ways:
First: For the engineering company, when you install a hard disk with fewer problems, your profit will increase, your service cost will decrease, and your project will make your customers feel more at ease. Engineering companies no longer have to worry about frequent door-to-door service due to problems with hard drives, which has led to a sharp increase in service costs and even a loss in the entire project.
Second: For the end user, if the hard disk failure is less, the risk of data loss is reduced, the system is more secure, and the monitoring system really plays its due role.
The following is not about the home desktop or notebook hard drive we use, but the dedicated hard drive. They mainly provide high-reliability and customized performance mass storage products for users of monitoring systems in the security and defense industries or special users (Internet cafes, KTVs) that need to run continuously, making it easier for users to store and manage their own surveillance videos. TV shows, videos, photos and documents.
Although these monitoring dedicated hard disks are no different in appearance from ordinary PC hard disks, monitoring the dedicated hard disks in terms of functions and parameters is more suitable for professional use. The differences are as follows:
First, the applicable environment
Ordinary PC hard drives are designed to meet the evolving trend of PC applications—reliable system data storage, versatile application support, and faster storage response times.
The more reliable system data storage means that under a hard disk (including array) system, the hard disk system can ensure reliable and secure storage of various system data. Diverse application support means that the hard drive can support multiple application environments: PC desktop applications, multimedia applications and games.
The monitoring dedicated hard disk is designed to meet the storage requirements of the digital hard disk recorder for system data and digital image information.
Monitoring dedicated hard drives is extremely stable with reliable support for system data. This is related to the system characteristics of the digital hard disk recorder. The system of the PC digital hard disk recorder is quite simple (there is no possibility of multiple systems coexisting), and the applications supported in the system are specially customized for the digital hard disk recorder (there are no multiple applications). The coexistence situation); embedded digital hard disk recorders generally do not have the concept of a system, the system is built-in, and has nothing to do with the hard disk.
The monitoring dedicated hard disk satisfies the digital hard disk recorder's file image storage and playback in a file mode, and optimizes the hard disk for the characteristics of the digital hard disk recorder input and playback to fully support the streaming media.
Second, the specific difference
1, the life of the hard disk is different
Ordinary hard disks will start at full speed when the power is turned on, and the instantaneous current may reach 2 amps or even higher. When the monitoring hard disk is started, it will accelerate slowly, and the starting current will be controlled below 2 amps. Because the monitoring system usually installs multiple hard disks, it will generate a large starting current at the moment of startup. If it is an ordinary hard disk, the power supply will be unbearable or even burned.
In addition, the monitoring system's transmission speed requirements for the hard disk are generally not high, but there will be frequent reading and writing of small data volumes.
Therefore, it is necessary to make a structural optimization design for the read/write characteristics of the monitoring system on the head reading and writing mechanism to extend the life of the magnetic head. The theoretical average trouble-free running time of the monitoring hard disk is much longer than that of the ordinary hard disk, and the stability and reliability are higher.
2, continuous working time difference
The design of a normal PC hard disk is based on 8×5. 8×5 refers to the ordinary PC hard disk working 8 hours a day, 5 days a week (hard disk work means the hard disk is in the read and write state. It is necessary to pay special attention to the two states after the hard disk is powered: working state and waiting state The working state is that the hard disk performs reading and writing work, and the waiting state is that the hard disk is not reading and writing but is in a standby state.
The monitoring dedicated hard disk is designed and developed according to the 24×7 enterprise environment requirements. 24×7 is working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (that is, continuous work). Therefore, an ordinary PC hard disk is not suitable for long-term continuous reading and writing. If an ordinary PC hard disk is required to be continuously read and written for a long time, the hard disk will be greatly damaged, and the hard disk may have abnormal sounds, read and write errors, work suspension, and the like. Causes the final damage to the hard drive.
Digital DVRs are running all the year round, so the hard disk must be able to work continuously for a long time. To meet this requirement is to monitor the dedicated hard disk.
3, start the difference
All 3.5-inch hard drives contain a motor system, so when the hard drive is powered up, it is similar to the case where the motor is powered up: a large startup current will occur at the initial time of power-up to complete the hard drive. If the external power supply system of the hard disk does not guarantee sufficient current support when the power is turned on, the hard disk will fail to boot, resulting in the hard disk being unavailable. And if this happens many times, it is easy to cause damage to the hard disk. Since the power supply of the hard disk motor is satisfied by the external power supply system DC 12V, the DC current of 12V is used as the standard when evaluating the starting current of the hard disk. The startup current of a normal PC hard disk is generally between 2.8A and 3.2A. The maximum startup current of the monitoring dedicated hard disk is 2.0A.
Digital hard disk recorders often use multiple hard disks for data storage. For example, installing 8 hard disks is as follows: ordinary PC hard disk startup current is 2.8×8=22.4A, and the lowest power consumption is 22.4A×12V=268.8W. The monitoring dedicated hard disk startup current is 2.0A×8=16A, and the upper limit power consumption is 16A×12V=192W. It can be seen that monitoring the dedicated hard disk requires less external power supply system under the same number of hard disks (the number of monitoring dedicated hard disks that can be installed is more under the support of the external power supply with the same output power).
Note: In the case of the above example, if the external power supply system can only guarantee 250W, some hard disks can be recognized when using ordinary PC hard disks, some hard disks can not be recognized, and there is no regularity.
4, running power consumption and heat dissipation difference
The power consumption here refers to the power consumption of the hard disk during normal read and write states. The operating power consumption of an ordinary PC hard disk is generally about 14.4 watts, and the operating power consumption of a monitoring dedicated hard disk is generally about 8 watts. It can be seen that the running power consumption of the monitoring dedicated hard disk is only 55% of that of the ordinary PC hard disk. The low operating power consumption is not only important for the power system, but also important for the heat dissipation of the digital hard disk recorder system (running power consumption). About 75% of it will be converted into heat).
In a digital hard disk recorder, if 8 hard disks are installed, the total power consumption of the ordinary PC hard disk is 14.5W×8=116W, and the total operating power consumption of the monitoring dedicated hard disk is 8W×8=64W. If you use a normal PC hard disk, you can imagine that there is such a high heat source in such a small space as the digital video recorder. The heat dissipation requirement for the system is very high. In order to ensure that the hard disk has a reasonable ambient temperature (0 to 60 ° C), The hard disk system must be effectively cooled. With the monitoring dedicated hard disk, the heating situation is much better----reducing the system cooling requirements to make the system more adaptable to the environment.
5, transmission difference
In addition to the transmission mode of the traditional PC hard disk, the monitoring dedicated hard disk also introduces an updated transmission mode---uninterrupted transmission mode, which is up to 65MB/s. By introducing an uninterrupted transmission mode, the support of the hard disk to the streaming media is more reliable, and the smoothness and stability of the playback of the digital hard disk recorder while being recorded are fully guaranteed. This is a feature that is not available on other hard drives.
In summary, the difference between an ordinary PC hard disk and a monitoring dedicated hard disk is that the monitoring dedicated hard disk fully takes into account the requirements of the digital hard disk recorder for the storage system, and further improves the application of the monitoring dedicated hard disk to the digital hard disk recorder by analyzing these requirements. Sexuality has fundamentally solved the storage problem of digital hard disk recorders, and has brought the reliability and stability of digital hard disk recorders to a new level.
Stability is above all else. Monitoring dedicated hard disk provides the most stable and secure data storage medium, reduces engineering service cost and reduces the risk of end user data loss. It is the most loyal partner of monitoring system industry, KTV and Internet cafe.
