Sharp, a Japanese manufacturer, has developed the IR2E55Y6, a driver that can drive seven LEDs in series with automatic dimming. It can be used for LED backlights for small LCD panels such as mobile phones.
The automatic dimming function is to divide the brightness of the LED backlight into 16 levels according to the surrounding brightness and the contrast of the image content, and implement time-sharing control. In this way, the optimal brightness display of the liquid crystal panel can be realized, and the power consumption can also be reduced. The ambient brightness is detected using an external logarithmic output illuminance sensor. When a 10×log (lx) μA output type sensor is used, an emission intensity of 3 to 55,000 lx can be detected.
Since the driver integrates a system consisting of five LED chips, such as the original LED backlight and various power supply circuits, on a single 3.57 mm square chip, the entire system is reduced by about 70%. The driver's power supply voltage is +2.7 to 3.2V. There are two types of output currents for the LEDs, which are 0 to 25.6 mA for the main panel and 0 to 12.8 mA for the incoming call indicator.
The scheduled sample supply will start from May 30, 2008, and the mass production will start from October this year, with a monthly capacity of 500,000. The sample price is 300 yen.
